The Evolution of Smart Home Technology

Ever since our parents purchased a home back then, we have seen timely evolutions in our homes due to the technology that keeps constantly changing. Moments were joyous for us whenever there was a new appliance in our home, whether it’s refrigerator, microwave oven or anything for that matter.

It always left us fascinated with how they worked, didn’t they?

For instance, Microwave Oven – an instant cooking machine that “tings” when your food is ready.

Those little and tiny innovations kept on becoming big with time and flash forward to 2021 when a single app in your phone can change the colors of the lights as per your convenience.

But how did we get here?

The Invention of Home Appliances:

Homes are meant for resting but back then, home owners couldn’t find that feature as most of the chores had to be manually done, like washing clothes, dishes, etc. It was time consuming, especially for working professionals. The era of inventions started during the 90s that changed the way we took care of our homes forever.

Just think how miraculous it seems to have a machine that washes and dries our clothes on its own or something that can manage the temperature inside our home just with a remote – that’s magical!

But, was that all? It was just the beginning.

By the handover of the twentieth century, most of the home owners had the gadgets that brought down human efforts on a large scale.

Smartphone and Artificial Intelligence:

Smartphones were introduced with an idea to access most things with a single device – music, games, internet and what not. Although nobody thought how powerful a mobile could be, AI (Artificial Intelligence) made it possible.

The term AI or Artificial Intelligence was coined in 1956 by John McCarthy, a concept that later on paved the way to implement smart-tech everywhere.

Right from the phones, to watches, television, refrigerators, working desks and mirrors – “smart”  became the suffix.

Technologists did not just come up with an evolution but also found a way to make it affordable and bring it into the people’s lives.

Virtual Assistants and Automation:

Virtual Assistants are nothing but the Conversational AI that works and performs a task according to our commands. With an idea to automate basic tasks like setting up an alarm, searching for a query, setting up a reminder or a to-do list, technologists around the world have made it possible to use it for smart home devices.

Smartphones, these days, come with a VA. Apple has “Siri”, Google has “OK Google” and there are also different and evolving devices like Amazon Alexa, made with the vision of complete automation.

On the top of that, they have now begun developing Alexa’s intelligent prediction and decision-making abilities, eventually increasing for advance-level reasoning. In other words, the goal for Alexa’s AI abilities is to get more sophisticated within a few years.

This level of prediction and reasoning will also be required in home automation systems. Let’s say you are not at home and a girl knocks on your door selling cookies. A camera-equipped doorbell would let the girl register that she is at your door and for what reason. It will then send a notification on our mobile device asking how many cookies you want, and order them on our behalf.

Smart Home Technology:

Smart Home Technology was introduced in the early 2000s. Everyone in the world began talking about the Internet of Things (IoT) when it came to smart homes. Slowly and gradually, home automation using IoT and connectivity became increasingly important to customers. With the prevalence of smartphones, the demand and urge to control smart home gadgets from a single app increased.

Google Nest entered the market in 2010 with the first WiFi Thermostat. Everything from the kitchen, to the rooms, can be controlled through mobile apps now. Leak sensors can you inform us if there’s a leakage in our house. Smart door locks with surveillance cameras can show you who’s at your door and protects your home more accurately than before.

Smart technology has become so common that there is not a single part of home life that it hasn’t touched. From VAs setting up an alarm to robots who can feed our pets and take care of daily and repetitive tasks.

Features of Home Technology:

One of the most important features of home technology is to utilize the earth’s limited resources in a conservative and effective manner. With time, individuals have become a lot more attentive towards smart home technology as they aim to create some wonderful experiences along with making our homes more secure, customizable and comfortable.

Sensible home construction started, with the invention of remote controls. Then we saw a commercial revolution, that came up with a lot of primary home appliances like laundry machines, refrigerators, washing machines, etc. Although they weren’t smart appliances, they proved to be a game changer for the individuals of the twentieth century. Since their introduction, inventors and technologists have never looked back.

Future Outlook and Expectations:

Watching “The Jetsons” and looking at what the future would be, was fascinating. The world with endless possibilities and where almost everything is automated. We cannot promise that the future would look exactly like that but, endless possibilities – a big yes.

The tech companies are now aiming to make Virtual Assistants (VAs) to shift from passive to proactive conversations. Rather than wait for and respond to requests, they will predict and anticipate what the user might want. The idea is to turn our virtual home assistant into an omnipresent companion that actively shapes our smart home experience.

They are also focusing on building the home assistant’s mastery of AI fundamentals, like video recognition, expanding to various accents and multi-language understanding, that would make the process seamless for taking care of home related activities more efficiently and accurately.

This is what we believe the next few years will be about: reasoning and making it more personal, with more context. It’s like bringing everything together to make smart homes more personalized, customizable and reliable.

Conclusion:

From a technical point of view, this would be a fantastic achievement. Combining various technologies to make smart homes more reliable for people to adopt and reduce human efforts to save more time.

On the other hand, from the user’s perspective, it would have some privacy implications. The devices would follow us, track our activities on a daily basis to make your experiences more customized than ever before.

It would be really exciting to see how it transforms the lives of people with also considering the privacy issues of the home owners.
